1999.io is blogging software that's easy to set up and use, with all the open features that blogging had in the year it all came together -- 1999.
Many of today's blogging vendors forgot about how great it was to be able to build on each others' work. But I didn't forget, and I want blogging to be as great as it was when it started, today. Why not? The network and the servers we use today are much more powerful than the ones we used way back then.
What if I didn't take huge amounts of venture capital and promise the investors billions of dollars in return. What if all I want to do is make and use the best software possible, without giving up any of our freedom? That's the idea of 1999.io.
It's called 1999 because we're going back to the beginning of blogging when the boom started, and rebuilding using the most modern server and user interface techniques, with all the openness and choice that was there at the beginning. We don't accept that your words have to be locked up on someone else's server. Even if you don't operate your own server, you should be able to download a copy of your site with a single command, and in 1999.io, you can.
